Grizzly Bear (Ursus horibilis) is a sub species of the Brown Bear. Their name comes from the “grizzled” appearance of their fur which can be gold or grayish at the tips- not that they perform “grisly” acts. In fact, Grizzlies usually only attack when they or their cubs are threatened and prefer to avoid contact with humans and other bears. One thing they do hate though is when wolves try to steal their food.
Grizzlies love to eat. Fish, clams, mammals, berries and plants- they love it all.
Speaking of food, Grizzlies love to eat. Fish, clams, mammals, berries and plants- they love it all. One of the few times the bears will congregate is when feeding on salmon runs. The rich and fatty salmon are delicious and helps to provide the extra calories necessary for the the Grizzly Bear to pack on up to 400 extra pounds before their 5-7 month winter nap. The Grizzly motto could be “Eat until Sleepy, Sleep until Hungry.”
